Sweden
January, 2003The most recent news from Sweden is of course the new legislation, effective from January 1st 2003. The use of donor gametes in in-vitro fertilization is now allowed, oocytes or sperm. Embryo donation and surrogacy are not allowed in this new law. The new legislation further emphasises the importance of single embryo transfer and calls for the use of two embryos for transfer only in exceptional cases. The medical profession has the responsibility of recommending criteria for single embryo transfer under a trial period to adjust procedures in all clinics to these more strict rules and to maintain the possibility of transferring two embryos to a selected group of patients. IVF-clinics are now working on these issues and as a result the proportion of single embryo transfers in Sweden is increasing dramatically. |
