The IVF Unit In Iceland is located at the National University Hospital in Reykjavík. The unit has a staff of 13 people, 3 doctors, 3 midwifes, 4 lab technicians,1 embryologist, 1 lab assistant and one secretary. The unit recently celebrated it's 10th anniversary. Each year we perform over 300 IVF/ICSI treatment cycles and about 500 IUI cycles although we only work 5 days a week, and never on weekends. All the OR and ET are done on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. In 1997 we started to do ICSI with good results. That same year we also started to use donor oocytes. Cryopreservation of embryos started 1996 and every year we perform about 80 frozen embryo replacements. In the beginning of 1998 we started to do assisted hatching (AHA). Today AHA is carried out in about 20 % of the cycles. The Unit runs a semen analysis laboratory that serves the majority of the analyses in Iceland. Donor sperm has been used since 1978 and always used donor sperm from Denmark. The IVF unit works under legislation from the parliament. Treatments and medicine are subsidised by the government. - Ida Dervic |
